'Colossal Reels' is a special slots feature usually associated with developer, Williams Interactive (WMS).

The Super Colossal Reels mechanic takes the excitement to the next level featuring a 5 x 4 reel set, as well as a Super Colossal 5 x 12 reel set where reel 5 is double the size and includes multiplier symbols of 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x, and 25x that are applied when in a winning combination, as well as Jackpot symbols that if in a winning combination awards the corresponding jackpot! What are Colossal Reels? Originally introduced in land based casinos and developed by WMS, the appearance of Colossal Reels feature has revolutionized slot gameplay in both brick & mortar and online casinos across the world.Unlike the standards slots, where the player is restricted with a single set of reels, Colossal Reels have an entirely different structure and offer quite a unique gaming.

Colossal Reels features two sets of reels on the same game-screen: a small set of reels played over three rows - like a conventional video slot - plus a second, five-reel set with 12 rows.

With so many reels in play at the same time, players can gamble across 100 paylines and have the chance to hit huge wins.

What are Colossal Reels?

Originally conjured up by the brains at US slots manufacturer, WMS, Colossal Reels started out as a feature on land-based games.

Since then, online versions of Colossal Reels slots have started appearing at some of the bigger online casinos.

With the Colossal Reels engine, two sets of reels are played on - a Main Reel Set with four rows and five reels - and a massive 'Colossal Reel Set, with 12 rows and five reels. In total, 100 paylines are gambled on each and every spin.

Features of Colossal Reels:

  • Up to 100 paylines from as little as £0.01 a coin
  • Stacked symbols on all reels
  • Play on two sets of reels at once
  • 'Transferring Wilds', which replicate from one set of reels to the other

Using Transferring Wilds

The benefit of having stacked icons means players can regularly bag lots of small wins. However, it's the presence of 'Transferring Wilds' that makes things a little more exciting.

Many slots feature Wild symbols - special icons that substitute for all regular icons on the reel to help complete winning paylines. Some slots feature 'Stacked' Wilds, which can fill two or three spaces on a reel.

Stacked Wilds feature on the small set of reels in a Colossal Reels slot. If that happens, however, the Wild transfers begin. The reel that is Wild will 'transfer' to the corresponding reel on the big set of reels. Obviously, then, with 12 rows on the big reels you're looking at 12 Wilds filling up an entire reel.

Finding Colossal Reels Slots

So far, WMS's trademarked Colossal Reels feature means you won't be finding too many other developers who have the same layout. Luckily, WMS make some pretty mean slots, so you can try out some of our free-play versions to see which theme takes you.

Epic Monopoly II (WMS)

WMS has been putting out slots based on the popular board game, Monopoly, for years. However, Epic Monopoly II takes the Transferring Wilds feature and ramps everything up to 11.

If the player hits four Stacked Wilds on the main reels, Wild transfers will start, turning the ENTIRE corresponding mini-set reel Wild (e.g. Reel 1 of the main set has four Stacked Wilds - the whole of Reel 1 on the mini-set then turns Wild). That can mean 12 symbols turning Wild at once on the second set of reels.

WMS's new slot, part of the 'Innovation Series', also features two sets of reels. Four Stacked Wilds again transfer over to the big reels.

However, there's an added twist with Free Spins Scatters appearing on Reels 1, 3 and 5 of both sets of reels. Any wins hit on the 5 x 12 set of reels are multiplied by 2. With spins retriggered, it means players could be looking at a total of 100 free spins.

Advantages/Disadvantages of Colossal Reels

Having 100 paylines, and Transferring Wilds, sounds like the stuff of big gamblers. But does playing Colossal Reels slots make sense?

Certainly, with two ways to win - the Main Reel Set and the Colossal Reel Set - plus the added bonus of Transferring Wilds, there seems to be ready money for the taking.

Play

However, to really take advantage you need to be playing at least 60 of those 100 paylines to have any effect. With many symbols stacked (and super-stacked on the Colossal Reel Set) you're gambling on hitting lots of very specific combinations regularly. Many of the Colossal Reels slots also have an RTP% of around 95% too, which comes in a lot lower than other volatile slots.

Colossal Reels

Colossal Reels are great if you are willing to bet all 100 paylines and have the bankroll to handle some big swings. But even with Transferring Wilds you're not guaranteed to hit it big. Give some of WMS's slots a try for free at VegasSlots.co.uk and see for yourself.

The Spartacus Gladiator of Rome slot is different to any other Ancient Rome themed slot you might have played. This uses the ‘Colossal Reels’ system developed by WMS. There are two sets of reels, one regular and one extra tall. They are linked by wild symbols, which will move between the reel sets when they are stacked.

There is a love story going on in the theme. The two highest paying symbols show a fierce male warrior and an equally menacing female one. All the classic icons of the era also appear. You’ll see the Colosseum, helmet, sword and shield combo and a fearsome lion on the reels.

This review shows you how to get the most from the Spartacus slots and Colossal Reel.

Basics: Spartacus Gladiator of Rome Colossal Reels Setup

Colossal reels is a unique slot setup which WMS has now used for several iconic games including Lil’ Red.

There are 2 sets of reels, which spin at the same time. On the left you’ll find a regular 5 reel, 3-row grid. This one has 20 win-lines. On the right there is a second set with 12 rows of symbols over 5 reels. This is the ‘colossal’ set. 80 win-lines are in play for this game.

You can spin for just 50c and up on this game – covering all 100 win-lines.

The sets of reels work independently. You can win on one or both on any spin. They are also linked together by special wild symbols. These show the Spartacus, Gladiator or Rome slot logo. When these appear individually, they are simply wild symbols. When a whole reel on the left is covered in them – a special feature kicks in.

Now that reel is transposed onto the colossal set on the right. You’ll see a glowing animation while it moves over.

With 12 rows instead of just 3, those wilds are a lot more valuable on the right-hand reel set. It is possible to get more than one wild reel – this is where your huge wins will come from.

Colossal Reels Bonus

Stacked Warrior Symbols

Gladiator symbols and those of the Roman lady are stacked. These can cover the entire reel on the left, and up to half of it on the right. These are also the highest paying symbols. Ideal spins see these combining with the stacked wilds.

As well as the unique Roman-era symbols covered above, there are playing card suits – drawn to look like they are made of glass.

Free Spins with Nudging Wilds

You can win up to 20 free spins with the Colosseum symbols. These also award scatter prizes of up to 20x your triggering bet. You get 8 spins for 3, 12 spins for 4 and the maximum 20 spins for 5. Those spins can be retriggered during the bonus feature.

Some epic, stirring music plays while the free spins games are in play. You will also have a better shot at getting wild reels, which will then transfer from left to right.

Any time one or more of the wilds hits during your free spins, it will nudge to fill the reel. When this happens on the left, you get that wild reel replicated on the right. It is possible to get all 5 reels wild on both sets of reels – for a huge win.

Where to Legally Play Spartacus Gladiator of Rome Slots in the US?

Along with several other iconic WMS / Scientific Games titles including Goldfish and Dancing Drums, Spartacus Gladiator of Rome can now be found at real money gambling sites. There are currently only a handful of states where online casinos are legal and regulated – though this number is set to increase. You can find WMS slot games at mobile casinos in West Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

You’ll also find the Spartacus slot in live casinos. This is one of several titles which use the unique Colossal reels setup.

Design of the WMS Spartacus Slots

While the non-standard reel setup will catch your eye, there is a lot more to the design than this. Many of the symbols – in particular the gladiator and female warrior symbols, are drawn in a lot of detail.

Having two sets of reels on a smaller screen does mean the individual symbols are on the smaller side. You’ll need to rely on the rapid snaking lines which show the winning combinations to follow your wins.

What is easy to follow is the movement of the wilds between the regular and colossal reel sets. You’ll find the usual electronic tunes which are in multiple WMS games – along with some stirring move soundtrack style music for the free spins.

Should You Play the WMS Spartacus Slots?

Super Colossal Reels Spartacus

Colossal reels are certainly worth taking for a spin. When you first see this setup, things can look unnecessarily complex. When you ‘tune in’ to the games, the appeal will quickly become clear.

Your biggest wins will come from those times you get multiple wild reels on the first (regular) set of reels. These move over to the right, potentially connecting many more wins on the right-hand set, which has a full 80 win-lines.
